It’s Really Snow

I woke up in the morning
And ran to the window
The night before my dad had said
There was a small chance of snow

I slowly opened the curtain
Ready for disappointment
As I gazed outside in awe
I felt like I was looking through a shaken snow globe

Yesterday, what had been a yard full of dead dry leaves
Was today, a Winter Wonderland

The snowflakes fell lazily from the sky
The lawn sparkled like diamonds
The icicles hung from everything and glittered like glass

I woke up my sister
We hurried to get dressed
Then we raced to be the first outside

A quiet peacefulness surrounded us
The birds songs were silent
The roads were now empty with no cars

I packed the snow in my hands
It felt like soft powder
I licked it
It melted in my mouth like cotton candy

We began to make a snowman
Sweet strawberries for the eyes
A small crunchy carrot for the nose
Plump blueberries for the mouth
And green grapes for the buttons

And then we got cold
We hurried indoors for the awaiting hot chocolate
It warmed our insides
As we sipped the sweet snack
The marshmallows were melting

And soon, the snow would too.
